Why Winter?.

Roots are a storage tank. Trees make sap all summer and store most of it in the roots for the winter. Then they go dormant. Like anesthesia in an operating room, they can’t feel a thing. Their pests and diseases also slow down or stop in the cold. In the spring the trees come out of it with a full tank of fuel ready to go. So off season conditions make this a great time to prune.
